What Temp Should You Dab At?

Temperature changes a dab more than anything else you control. Same jar, same rig: at the right temp it tastes like the strain, at the wrong temp it tastes like a campfire. Here is the short version and the why.

The short answer

Aim for roughly 500 to 550 degrees Fahrenheit on quartz. That is the low-temp window where terpenes vaporize instead of scorching. Much under 450 and oil puddles and wastes; push past 600 and you are burning off the exact flavor you paid for.

Why low and slow wins

Terpenes are volatile and most vaporize between roughly 310 and 400 degrees, while THC vaporizes around 315. High heat does not get you higher, it just torches the terps and leaves a harsh, dark hit. Low-temp dabs carry the full profile of the strain into the vapor, which is the entire point of live resin.

No thermometer? Use the timing method

Heat the banger evenly until it just starts to glow, about 25 to 30 seconds with a standard torch, then let it cool 45 to 60 seconds before you drop your dab. Thicker quartz holds heat longer, so cool longer. Always cap it: a carb cap lowers the effective vaporization point so you can run cooler and still clear the puddle.

Cold starts

Load the dab into a cold banger first, then heat gently until it bubbles and vaporizes, usually 10 to 15 seconds. Cold starts are the gentlest option for flavor, great for smaller dabs, and they keep your quartz cleaner.

E-rigs and e-nails

Set it and forget it: 500 to 540 degrees is the sweet spot for live resin sauce and badder. If your device runs presets, pick the lowest one that fully clears your dab.

And for carts

Same principle, smaller scale. Run your battery at its lowest setting, around 2.4 to 3.0 volts, and take slow pulls. High-voltage settings built for distillate scorch live resin.

Whatever you run, start lower than you think. You can always warm up; you cannot un-burn a terp.
